This is warm, jammy and comforting, with bubbling berries underneath a golden topping of buttery sourdough crumbs with oats. It feels like a breakfast pudding, cosy, indulgent and full of summer fruit flavour yet still fresh enough to start the day off the right way.

Why it’s good for you:

Berries are rich in antioxidants and fibre, which help support digestion, heart health and cell protection. Sourdough is often easier to digest than regular bread, and using fresh berries means you get plenty of natural sweetness without needing lots of added sugar. In fact you can omit the sugar altogether or adjust to personal preference.

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

  • 500g fresh berries (British if in season)
  • 1 tbsp caster sugar
  • Zest of ½ lemon

For the topping:

  • 2 slices sourdough, torn into small pieces
  • 100g butter
  • 40g brown sugar
  • 80g rolled oats
  • Pinch cinnamon

Method:

  1. Heat the oven to 180°C fan / 200°C.
  2. Toss the berries with the sugar, lemon zest, then place in a baking dish.
  3. Melt the butter in a small pan and cook until it turns golden and smells nutty.
  4. Stir in the sourdough pieces, oats, brown sugar and cinnamon. Blitz everything in a food processor.
  5. Scatter over the berries and bake for 20–25 minutes until bubbling and golden.
  6. Serve warm on its own or with yoghurt.
